What this adds

Autopsy currently has no way to look inside Microsoft ESE / JET Blue databases - ntds.dit, SRUDB.dat, WebCacheV01.dat, Windows Search Windows.edb, Exchange mailbox .edb files and so on. They are detected as application/octet-stream, so only the hex viewer applies to them.

This PR gives them the same treatment the SQLite viewer gives SQLite files, with a parser built into Autopsy (no external tool, no new library):

  • org.sleuthkit.autopsy.coreutils.esedb: a read-only ESE parser (EseDatabase, EseTable, EseColumn, EseRecord, EseDateTime). It reads the header and the catalog (MSysObjects), including columns inherited from template tables, walks each table's B+tree, and decodes fixed, variable and tagged columns, multi-values, long values (chunked, 32 and 64 bit LIDs) and the 7-bit and LZXPRESS compression schemes. XPRESS9/10 values are reported as unsupported rather than guessed. Indexes are not read; records come back in primary key order. Pages are cached (LRU, 2048 pages) and the file is only ever opened for reading.
  • New built-in file type application/x.ms-ese, matched on the ESE header magic 0x89ABCDEF (little endian at offset 4), added to CustomFileTypesManager next to the Windows registry type.
  • ESEDatabaseViewer, a FileTypeViewer registered in the Application content viewer. It lists the user tables of the database, pages through the records 100 at a time (DateTime columns as timestamps, binary values as hex, multi-values joined), and exports a table to CSV into the case export directory. The database is copied to the case temp directory while it is displayed (logical files are used in place), each open attempt owns its own copy, and the copy is deleted when the viewer is reset. All work runs off the EDT in cancellable SwingWorkers.
  • A paragraph in the user docs (content_viewer.dox).

How it was tested

  • Oracle comparison: every value of every table of a real 54 MB ntds.dit (format revision 20, dirty shutdown, 18,424 rows, 14 tables, the datatable alone has 3,496 columns) was dumped with this parser and with an independent implementation (dissect.esedb) and compared field by field. Schemas are identical and all values agree, with four explainable exceptions where this parser does better:
    • 35 long values that the reference reports as "unsupported compression" are actually uncompressed chunks it misdetects (it has a chunk-offset accounting bug); this parser returns well-formed XML of the expected size for all of them.
    • One record of 3 bytes that crashes the reference is returned here as an all-null record.
    • 6 extra records: the dirty database has three leaf pages linked in the page chain but not yet referenced by a parent (an uncommitted split); this parser follows the chain, the reference follows only one page.
    • One long value whose key is missing from the LV tree is reported as an error by both.
  • Unit tests (Core/test/unit/.../coreutils/esedb): LZXPRESS short, half-byte and long match lengths, invalid match offset, 7-bit ASCII and Unicode, the XPRESS size header, pass-through of uncompressed data, XPRESS9 reporting; OLE date and FILETIME decoding and the implausible-value guards. 12 tests, all passing (run with JUnit 4.13.2 from the platform).
  • The touched files compile cleanly with JDK 21 against the 4.23.1 release jars with the @NbBundle.Messages annotation processor; the generated keys are identical to the ones added to Bundle.properties-MERGED.
  • I was not able to run a full Autopsy build on my machine (no TSK native libraries), so the Swing panel itself has not yet been exercised inside Autopsy. Testing on a real case would be very welcome; I am happy to iterate on anything reviewers find.

Notes for reviewers

  • Only user tables are listed (MSys* system tables are skipped unless there is nothing else); easy to change.
  • Row counts are not shown because counting requires reading every page of the table; the viewer asks for one row more than a page to know whether Next should be enabled. Paging to page N re-reads the table from the start, like OFFSET in the SQLite viewer.
  • No API-CHANGES.txt entry: the viewer classes are package-private. The parser package is public so that ingest modules can reuse it later (SRUM, WebCache, Windows Search), which would be a follow-up.
  • Format knowledge comes from the Microsoft Extensible-Storage-Engine sources and libesedb's documentation; the code is new and Apache-2.0 like the rest of Core.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for viewing Microsoft ESE databases, browsing tables and records, and exporting table data to CSV.
    • Browse records in pages, with table row counts and navigation controls.
    • Database values are displayed in readable formats, including timestamps and hexadecimal binary data; supported long, multi-valued, and compressed values are decoded.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on browsing ESE databases and exporting table data.

Autopsy had no way to look inside ntds.dit, SRUDB.dat, WebCacheV01.dat,
Windows Search or Exchange .edb files: they were detected as
application/octet-stream and only the hex viewer applied.

This adds:

- A built-in file type, application/x.ms-ese, matched on the ESE header
magic 0x89ABCDEF (little endian at offset 4), next to the existing
  Windows registry type in CustomFileTypesManager.
- ESEDatabaseViewer, a FileTypeViewer registered in the Application
content viewer. It lists the user tables of the database (with the
friendly names of the detected application profile), pages through
the records 100 at a time with timestamps and binary values decoded,
and exports a table to CSV in the case export directory - the same
  workflow as the SQLite viewer.
- EdbExplorerTool, a small wrapper that runs the cross-platform, read-only
EDB Explorer command line tool (https://github.com/keyuraghao/EDB_FILE_EXPLORER)
and parses its JSON output. The tool is an optional external dependency:
it is looked up in a user-selected path (ModuleSettings), the
EDB_EXPLORER_EXECUTABLE environment variable, PATH and the installers'
default locations. When it is missing the viewer explains how to install
it and offers a "Locate edb-explorer..." button.

The database is written to the case temp directory while it is displayed
(logical files are used in place) and deleted when the viewer is reset.
Each command runs as a short-lived process, so nothing stays open on the
evidence file, and all work happens off the event thread in SwingWorkers
that can be cancelled.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds a read-only ESE database parser and integrates it into Autopsy’s content viewer. The viewer identifies ESE files, displays table data in pages, formats decoded values, and exports tables as CSV. The change also adds parser tests and user documentation.

Add a spreadsheet-safe export without altering raw evidence.

exportTableToCsv writes EDB Explorer 1.0.0 output directly to the investigator-selected CSV file. EDB Explorer quotes commas, quotes, and newlines, but it does not neutralize formula-leading values. A cell beginning with =, +, -, @, tab, or carriage return can be interpreted as a formula when opened in spreadsheet software.

Do not sanitize the only export if it must preserve forensic values. Keep the raw CSV unchanged and provide a separate spreadsheet-safe export that prefixes formula-leading cells with a single quote or space. CSV quoting alone is not sufficient.

  intact on failure.
- The export worker is tracked and cancelled when the viewer is reset or

…tool

Replace the EdbExplorerTool wrapper with a built-in, read-only parser for
Microsoft Extensible Storage Engine databases in the new package
org.sleuthkit.autopsy.coreutils.esedb, so the content viewer has no
external dependency:

- EseDatabase opens a file, reads the header and the catalog
(MSysObjects) and exposes EseTable / EseColumn, including columns
  inherited from template tables (Exchange).
- Records are produced by walking each table's B+tree depth first and,
for dirty databases, by following the leaf page chain beyond the last
page the parents reference. Fixed, variable and tagged columns,
multi-values, long values (chunked, 32 and 64 bit LIDs) and the 7-bit
and LZXPRESS compression schemes are decoded; XPRESS9/10 values are
  reported as unsupported.
- EseDateTime decodes DateTime columns as OLE dates with a FILETIME
fallback, as several Windows databases store the latter.

ESEDatabaseViewer now opens the database directly, pages through records
and exports CSV with its own writer. Unit tests cover the compression
schemes and timestamp decoding with hand-built vectors; the parser was
checked against a 54 MB ntds.dit by comparing every value of every table
with an independent implementation.

… open failure

- Size the long value buffer from the chunks actually read, not from the
  header's size field.
- LZXPRESS output is bounded by the uncompressed size announced in the
XPRESS header (or a 64 MiB ceiling when there is none); a stream that
produces more is rejected instead of growing the buffer.
- EseDatabase.open closes the file when decoding the catalog throws an
unexpected runtime exception, and reports it as a corrupt catalog.
- The viewer's open worker closes the database and deletes its temporary
copy itself when it is cancelled after the open completed.
