Correct the authentication guide and overview to describe peer-group checks, peer-owner status checks, and the CIDR restrictions that still apply to NetBird-Only services, including custom overlay ranges.

Clarify identity header values and trust requirements, dashboard confirmation behavior, and the effect of removing authentication. Replace the incorrect user-group image with Mermaid and delete both that obsolete image and the misleading default-allow screenshot.

The matching backend identity-header guidance is updated separately in #1071.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified that NetBird-Only Access checks peer group membership and, for peers with a user owner, account and user status. A user’s group membership alone does not grant access to all their peers.
    • Explained that configured CIDR allowlists and blocklists apply to WireGuard requests, while country and CrowdSec checks are skipped. NetBird-Only Access does not override CIDR rules, and callers may use a custom account network range.
    • Clarified that public access restrictions remain effective without authentication, and removing NetBird-Only Access does not restore previously enabled authentication methods or remove access restrictions.
    • Updated guidance on identity headers, setup, and when the dashboard displays an access warning.

Walkthrough

The reverse proxy guides now describe peer-group authorization, identity-header behavior, WireGuard restrictions, and how configured access restrictions interact with authentication settings.

Changes: Reverse Proxy Authentication

Layer / File(s) Summary
Peer authorization and network restrictions
src/pages/manage/reverse-proxy/authentication.mdx, src/pages/manage/reverse-proxy/index.mdx
The guides describe peer-group checks and owner-account requirements. They state that configured CIDR rules apply to WireGuard requests, while country and CrowdSec checks are skipped.
Identity headers and trust boundaries
src/pages/manage/reverse-proxy/authentication.mdx
The guide documents identity-header values, omission rules, and group-label details. It warns that direct backend access can allow forged headers.
Authentication and restriction settings
src/pages/manage/reverse-proxy/authentication.mdx
The guide explains when public-access confirmation appears and states that access restrictions remain when authentication methods are removed. It also says removed authentication methods are not restored automatically.

  • netbirdio/docs#1071: Both PRs document identity-header values and backend trust constraints.

Suggested reviewers: mlsmaycon

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to f848a

The corrected guides are consistent on CIDR restrictions and custom overlay ranges. No issue identified here needs to block merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 8750c

The updated guidance makes access controls and backend trust requirements more explicit. No weakened enforcement is evidenced, but the linked backend guide remains inconsistent and the documented behavior has not been verified against the running implementation.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The guide explicitly separates proxy authentication from backend trust: the proxy strips client-supplied identity headers, but a client reaching the backend directly can forge them. Header trust therefore requires restricting backend reachability to the intended NetBird-Only proxy service, not merely checking header presence. This is a documented attack condition, not a verified reachable vulnerability.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The linked backend guide still describes user-group values and recommends per-user authorization using them, while the revised guide specifies peer groups and mutable display labels. Its broader trust wording is qualified by a proxy-only reachability warning, but its example checks header presence. These older recommendations remain a documentation consistency limitation, not evidence that this PR introduced or worsened runtime exposure.

A rabbit checks the peer groups at the gate,
Then CIDR rules decide the route,
Headers carry names when values are safe,
Old restrictions still remain in place,
The rabbit hops away, docs clear and straight.

- Line 82: Update the X-NetBird-Groups description in the header table to
identify the groups as the user’s groups, consistent with the backend
authorization contract, rather than the calling peer’s groups. Preserve the
comma-separated display-name format and fallback to group IDs when names are
unavailable.
- Line 69: Update the NetBird-Only guidance to state that configured CIDR
allowlists and blocklists still apply, country and CrowdSec checks are skipped,
and overlay addresses may use a custom account range rather than CGNAT; check
the nearby default-allow screenshot description and align it with this behavior.
