Modularize the dataset type to ensure the clear separations of responsibility between its components and simplify the code.

Dataset type

Non-owning dataset view is a single type dataset_view<T, IdxT, Spec>. It is a simple type meant to be passed by value. It has the same const/non-const semantics as mdspans: dataset_view<const T, IdxT, Spec> means the data is immutable.

Owning dataset is a single type dataset<T, IdxT, Spec> and implements a unique owner semantics, same as mdarray. It has the same constness semantics as mdarray: dataset<const T, IdxT, Spec> is not allowed, const dataset<T, IdxT, Spec>& cannot produce non-const views.

Dataset components

data member of dataset/view is responsible for storing the bytes. It carries information about the shape and the layout of the data storage.
The dense dataset is implemented as an alias of mdarrays using data_type = mdarray<...> and retains all of mdarray functionality for free.

Optional manifest member of dataset/view stores everything that is needed to use the encoded data (for example, codebooks).

Specification

The spec type defines the types and primitives for each dataset type. Those are saved one spec per file.

Implementation detail

  • The single pair of dataset/dataset_view pair instead of many instantiations makes the common api easily discoverable
  • The new dataset uses mdarrays and mdspans directly as the storage backend, thus reduces some code duplicates and simplifies call sites in the algorithm implementations
  • dataset_view aims to properly implement the constness semantics in contrast to the current state, in which the views were always immutable
  • The diff is reduced to a minimum by aliasing the old types to the new types where possible (in common.hpp). These can be removed in the follow up and should help reduce the codebase size.
  • The sparse dataset is added as an example for future and is not used anywhere at the moment.

Breaking change: the C++ api changes.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a unified C++ dataset API with support for dense, sparse, empty, scalar-quantized, and product-quantized datasets, including host- and device-backed options.
  • Documentation
    • Added C++ API reference pages for dataset types and representations, and updated existing guidance for dataset views and quantization.

Changes

This change adds a core C++ dataset API for owning datasets, views, and dense, empty, sparse, scalar-quantized, and product-quantized specifications. Neighbor and quantization code now uses dataset views and dictionary accessors. Serialization, integrations, tests, and API documentation are updated to use the new interfaces.

Changes

Core Dataset API

Neighbor dataset aliases and factories
cpp/include/cuvs/neighbors/common.hpp, fern/pages/cpp_api/cpp-api-neighbors-common.md
Maps neighbor dataset aliases to core dataset types and adds mapping-based dense view, empty-view, and allocation helpers.
Neighbor index and integration updates
cpp/include/cuvs/neighbors/cagra.hpp, cpp/src/neighbors/*, cpp/bench/ann/src/cuvs/*, cpp/cmake/patches/*, c/src/neighbors/*, cpp/tests/neighbors/*, examples/cpp/src/*

Use Doxygen comment blocks for the public dataset members.

The public members of dataset have plain /* ... */ comments. Examples are view(), as_dataset_view(), stride(), data_view() and dictionary_view(). n_rows(), dim() and data_const_view() have no comment. The Fern API generator reads only Doxygen-style /** ... */ blocks. These members will therefore have no generated documentation. The same pattern appears in cpp/include/cuvs/core/dataset/view.hpp. Change these blocks to /** @brief ... @return ... */.

As per path instructions: "Doxygen-style source comments for all public functions/classes, consumed by the Fern API generator".

Thank you for the PR! I reviewed the design myself, along with an AI to plug through the striding/dimensionality changes and attempt to catch if there were any invalid combinations.

I have no reviews for the design, and I am only posting AI-reviewed striding/dimensionality mismatches that I myself verified and they seem to be real bugs. Could you please check them out?

PR is almost ready from my side! I asked my agent to help fix the failures in CI. After self-review, it seems to me that its findings are the right way to fix the bugs.

The new standard dataset aliases expose an existing unsafe assumption in the C wrapper: _from_cagra() always casts the stored pointer to device_padded_index, even when CAGRA build stored a host standard index.
The new standard and padded dataset views have different layouts—24 versus 32 bytes in the host reproduction. Because DatasetViewT dataset_ precedes the file-descriptor members, that cast makes the padded-index methods read the wrong offsets.
This explains the ACE disk conversion failures: Python CI reports invalid graph-file-descriptor paths and allocation errors, and Java’s testAceDiskBasedBuild fails in cuvsHnswFromCagra. Please dispatch conversion according to the stored index’s memory space and layout.

Fixed: _from_cagra now dispatches on the stored index's memory space and layout instead of always assuming device_padded_index.

The new tests attempt both padded-file → standard-index loading and standard-file → padded-index loading. However, the existing deserializer requires an exact dataset-kind match.
Both calls therefore throw before reaching the new destination-layout normalization helper. Current CI confirms both failures, reporting kinds 1 versus 2, and 2 versus 1.
If cross-layout loading is intended, the outer validation must permit compatible dense kinds. Otherwise, these tests should exercise restoration using the matching serialized kind.

Ah, right. Cross-kind loading was never supported, so the tests now load each kind into the same kind, plus a dataset-level test for a wire stride wider than dim.

MakeVpqDatasetFromPaddedView still constructs a standard view over dimension 16 with stride 24. That now violates the standard factory’s contiguous-storage requirement, so the test throws before reaching quantization.
Current preprocessing CI confirms this failure. Please use a supported padded dataset fixture, or pass the strided mdspan directly to make_vpq_dataset, which accepts the explicit row stride.
